Twenty years old Matas from Panevėžys agreed to share with me his story about the darkest period of his life. It all started when Matas broke up with his girlfriend after working and spending summer in Cyprus for two months. “I had lost the only person who cared about me.” – he said. They have been together for three years. She was the one who helped him and invited to stay with her family when his alcoholic father cast him out of the house and told him “you’re eighteen now, so you can find a job and live where you want.”
The rest of the summer Matas was spending at home, laying in bed. He had no aims and there were nothing he wanted to do. After one month he went to Netherlands to work. Then for the first time he felt absolutely lonely. There were no friends around, parents did not care about him. Every day seemed to be harder and harder. He felt emotional pain and there were nothing to bring him joy. Matas started taking drugs very often.
When everything seemed to be bad enough for Matas, the first week he was back in Lithuania, a car hit him. “Even injuries after that accident was not more painful than the emotional pain.” – Matas said. When he was in a hospital an old friend visited him. Matas decided to talk with him about his feelings. “It was the best decision I made after a long time.” His friend listened to him. He was sad about Matas and that he suffered everything on his own. A friend listed many things in this world to be happy about, he even encouraged Matas to visit pshychologist.
Now Matas is still healing from depression, but he finally sees a bright future and he have goals again. “For people suffering something similar like me I advise to fight with this disease, but never fight alone. There are always people who want to help. The best cure could be talking with someone.”
