Giuseppe Alfano was a radio journalist and a technical education teacher in middle schools. The reporter investigated local business people, mafia fugitives, politicians, civil servants and alleged freemasons for a regional journal called The Sicily. He was telling the secrets of the clans and wanted to let people know the truth.
In 1993 Alfano was fatally shot while parking his car in the small Sicilian village where he used to live with his family. According to Reporters Without Borders, Giuseppe Alfano was killed by a shot fired into his mouth, a method of execution used by the Mafia for those who have "talked to much." The first
rescuers found him with his head on the steering wheel, still
sitting in the driver's seat of a car. It looked like he had just returned
and was parking a car to go home, when
the killers came into action.
In 1993 the area of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto,
has been living for months a tragic season of blood. A few years ago, it was under the control of the mafia clan. Since its disintegration, a clan struggle has arisen that has taken many victims and Alfano was one of them. According to Italian news website Idn Kronos, local mafia boss Giuseppe Gullotti was convicted of organising Alfano's murder but no one has been convicted of ordering or carrying out the killing of Alfano.
According to Womensenews, after father’s death, in 2007, Alfano’s daughter set up the Association for the Families of Mafia Victims. Based in Sicily, it has 120 branches around Italy. The group encourages survivors of Mafia killings to overcome fears of reprisal and cooperate with police and trials.
